This is the driving day... Drive up to the Adirondac Loj parking area, which is located just 9 miles outside of Lake Placid. From Lake Placid, get on route 73, heading south. 4 miles south of town, there is a sign for the Adirondac Loj. Turn here, and follow this road for approximately 4.8 miles to the main parking lot. (There is a small fee, so bring some cash). Hiking: 2.5mi Starting out at the Adirondac Loj trailhead, you will be following ADK 61 blue trail to Marcy Dam. Strung across the dam, is a permanent bear bag wire, where you can hang your food. The campsites are in a loop once you cross the dam, basecamp will be set here.

Hiking: 10 - 12mi Starting from base camp, and traveling light, you will have two options...

    • (1.3mi) - First is the more rugged of the trails, up Whales Tail Notch, will start out on the western bank of Marcy Dam, ADK 67. This is normally a ski trail, and as such, is cut pretty wide, so there really isn't a problem staying on the trail. However, you will be climbing approximately 400 feet in three quarters of a mile, to get to the junction of the ADK 64 yellow.
    • (1.7mi) - Second is the easier of the routes , but involves a trek back from whence ye came... Heading back on Blue 61 towards Adirondac Loj, you will hit a junction at approximately a mile, and right across from MacIntyre Brook. At this junction, turn left onto ADK 64 yellow, and head south west, where you will find the junction from the above option approximately half a mile away.

(9.5mi) - Now that you are in a common area, continue heading south west until you reach the intersection for Wright Peak, ADK 65 blue. Yeah, you've earned it... turn left and head east for approximately a half mile, for your first peak of the day. Enjoy the view, but don't sit too long, as there is plenty more hiking to do. Heading back down Wright, you will be turning left again on the ADK 64 yellow trail, heading almost south to the summit of Algonquin. From here, you have approximately 5 miles of hiking to get back to Marcy Dam. Descend from Boundary on ADK 71 yellow, to Lake Colden. Then, taking the north west shore, ADK 69 blue, work your way north east and back to Marcy Dam via Avalanche Pass.

Hiking: 2.5mi Take your time in the morning, and head out to the cars, backtracking the way you came into Marcy Dam. For a fantastic place for dinner, head on down to the Buffalo Head Restaurant in Forestport... just follow the signs! That's kindof a tradition with me :-) After this, head back home check another High Peak off your list.
