Hiking (Marcy Dam/Mt Colden Loop)

This is the driving day... Drive up to the Adirondac Loj parking area, which is located just 9 miles outside of Lake Placid. From Lake Placid, get on route 73, heading south. 4 miles south of town, there is a sign for the Adirondac Loj. Turn here, and follow this road for approximately 4.8 miles to the main parking lot. (There is a small fee, so bring some cash). Hiking: 2.5mi Starting out at the Adirondac Loj trailhead, you will be following ADK 61 blue trail to Marcy Dam. Strung across the dam, is a permanent bear bag wire, where you can hang your food. The campsites are in a loop once you cross the dam, basecamp will be set here.

Hiking: 9mi When you get up, you will be hiking the ADK 68 yellow trail down to Lake Colden via Avalanche Pass, for approximately 3 miles. Here, you will follow the southeastern shore of the lake for approximately half a mile and reach the trail crossing to the peak of Mount Colden, ADK 70 red trail. Enjoy the peak, as it is a pretty sweet view, making the climb well worth it! To head back down to camp, take the easier route heading down the ADK 74 yellow trail to Lake Arnold, and then following the ADK 73 blue trail back to Marcy Dam.

Hiking: 2.5mi Take your time in the morning, and head out to the cars, backtracking the way you came into Marcy Dam. For a fantastic place for dinner, head on down to the Buffalo Head Restaurant in Forestport... just follow the signs! That's kindof a tradition with me :-) After this, head back home check another High Peak off your list.
