Hike/Canoe (Wright Mtn & Floodwood Pond)
This is the driving day... Drive up to the Meadowbrook Public Campground, which is located just 4 miles outside of Saranac Lake. Be sure to sign in before 9pm, and then have an outstanding night sleeping under the stars!
Hiking Option 1: 4-5mi (4 Hours) Starting at the campground (09:00), there is a posted trailhead just to the side of a parking area in Ray Brook. From here, you simply head south west, on pretty flat ground for approximately one mile to a junction heading south. At this point you will turn left and hike south, south-east. You will take this for another mile to the top of Scarface (2900 feet elevation). Once you have had your view from the top, head back down the mountain, and back to camp in time for lunch (13:00).
Hiking Option 2: 7.5mi (8 Hours) Rising quickly, and early (07:00), then starting out at the Adirondac Loj trailhead (08:00) in spaced groups of no larger than 15, you will be following ADK 61 blue trail to a junction at approximately one mile, and right across from MacIntyre Brook (Fill up on water here). At this junction, turn left onto ADK 64 yellow, and head south west, to the junction for Wales Tail Notch approximately half a mile away. Continue heading south west until you reach the intersection for Wright Peak, ADK 65 blue. Yeah, you've earned it after hiking up 2400 feet... turn left and head east for approximately a half mile, for a fantastic view from the summit (4580 feet elevation). Enjoy the view, but don't sit too long, as there is plenty more hiking to do to get back in time for dinner (18:00). See if you can find the B47 Bomber that crashed in 1962!
Back at camp, there are actually showers, and flush toilets (Really roughing it this trip ;-) Start a fire, sit back in your hammock, and enjoy Gods creation! There will be a great feast, followed by tasty treats and fellowship with friends! Everyone I am sure will sleep like a stone.
Paddling: 6mi (4 Hours) Packing up in the morning, and heading over to Hickoks Boat Livery (20 min away) the activity of the day awaits! Canoeing! We will head out of Fish Creek Ponds under the bridge, and into Square Pond. Paddling past the swimming area, we will head into Fish Creek and back to Little Square Pond. Then taking a small channel, head back to Floodwood Pond. There is a great island there for lunch! Then, get back in the boats, and head for the cars... For a fantastic place for dinner, head on down Route 28 to the Buffalo Head Restaurant in Forestport... just follow the signs! That's kindof a tradition with me :-) After this, head back home check three High Peaks off your list. Also, support the locals, and stop in at Adirondac Loj and then at Mountain Man Outdoors in nearby inlet, for some pretty decent deals on gear!
